Is Polygon (jeton POL, ex-MATIC) (POL) halal?
The six conditions are met for a spot purchase.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/05/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Native token of Polygon Chain (formerly Polygon PoS), an EVM-compatible network anchored to Ethereum; used for gas fees and staking Issuer: Polygon Labs Services (Switzerland) AG (subsidiary of Polygon Labs Holdings (Cayman) Ltd.) is seeking admission to trading in the EU; parameters set by governance proposals (PIPs).
POL replaced MATIC, the former native token of the Polygon network: since September 2024, MATIC has been convertible 1:1 into POL, which became the gas and staking token (hence the file named “matic”). Initial supply of 10 billion, with annual issuance decided by governance.
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. POL is used to pay for gas and to stake on Polygon Chain, an EVM network used for a variety of applications; according to Polygon Labs, the prediction market platform Polymarket is built on it (see tolerance).
- « The Token is the gas and staking token of the Polygon PoS Network » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- « the crypto-native predictions market platform built on Polygon PoS » Polygon Labs (blog) (2025-06-06)
- No riba : met. Holding POL pays no yield. Rewards (annual issuance and fees) go to validators and to those who delegate their tokens to them; this staking is covered in autres_constats.
- « In exchange, they earn staking rewards and transaction fees. » Polygon (documentation) (validateurs) (2026-10-05)
- « This results in an effective 2% annual POL emission beginning after June 2025. » Polygon (documentation) (2026-10-05)
- No gambling : met. The spot purchase is of an ERC-20 token recorded on Ethereum, freely transferable; it is not a contract on a price difference.
- « The Token is natively issued on Ethereum pursuant to the ERC-20 standard. » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- « The Tokens to be admitted to trading are freely transferable. » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- No excessive gharar : met. The MiCA white paper describes the supply (10 billion at the start, annual issuance of 2% as of its date, i.e. about 10.5 billion in total) and the attached rights: no enforceable right against the issuer.
- « The Token was launched with an initial supply of 10 billion units » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- « As of the date of this White Paper, the Emission Rate is set at 2% per annum » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- Real ownership : met. POL is an ERC-20 token, freely transferable: it is held in an Ethereum-compatible wallet. The platforms where it can be bought were not studied.
- « The Token is natively issued on Ethereum pursuant to the ERC-20 standard. » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- No fraud or manipulation : met. No sanction targeting the issuer or the token was found; the AMF returns no result for “polygon”. Still open: concentration (Etherscan: 96.37% of POL on the Ethereum side in the top 100 addresses, including protocol contracts), MATIC cited among the “Crypto Asset Securities” in the SEC's 2023 complaint against Binance (dropped in 2025), and the I-SCAN list, not read. Halal Bourse rule (October 6, 2026): holder concentration, a dismissed accusation or a withdrawn complaint is information, not established fraud; the condition is considered met as long as no sanction or deception of buyers is recorded.
- « Top 100 Concentration 96.37% » Etherscan (POL holders) (2026-10-05)
- « trading symbols SOL, ADA, MATIC, FIL, ATOM, SAND, MANA, ALGO, AXS, and COTI » SEC (plainte contre Binance, 2023) (2023-06-05)
- Réseau ouvert et généraliste : met. un outil neutre
- « The Network is permissionless and decentralized by design. » Polygon Labs (livre blanc MiCA) (2026-01-09)
- « The network supports a maximum of 105 active validators at any time (PIP-4). » Polygon (documentation) (2026-10-05)
Tolerance case
T1. POL is the gas and staking token of Polygon Chain, an EVM network with no access restriction at the chain level; the number of active validators is limited to 105. Polymarket, a prediction market platform, is built on this network (fact noted, not quantified). Polygon Labs Services' revenue comes from services billed to other entities in the ecosystem, with no published breakdown: T2 cannot be quantified.
Contract security scan
GoPlus security scan of the POL contract on Ethereum: 105,151 holders; top ten wallets excluding platforms and contracts 12.8%; published code. Signals found: Minting right: the supply can be increased by the contract owner (is_mintable). Hidden contract owner (hidden_owner). Transfers can be paused by the contract (transfer_pausable). Reading: Identified issuer (Polygon Labs): the minting right and the ability to pause transfers are protocol powers, not rug pull signals within the meaning of rule A.8; they are reported for information.
