Is BNB (BNB) halal?
No condition fails, but 1 point remains to be verified or falls under a tolerated case.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/03/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Native currency of the BNB Chain network (layer 1 with smart contracts) and token of the Binance exchange platform Issuer: Binance (initial issuance in 2017); the quarterly burns are now announced by the BNB Foundation.
BNB is used to pay transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain, opBNB and BNB Greenfield, to delegate to validators, to vote in network governance and to obtain fee discounts on the Binance platform. Its total supply was 133,166,127.91 BNB on July 15, 2026, with an official target of 100,000,000 BNB to be reached through successive burns.
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. BNB is used to pay the transaction fees of a general-purpose EVM-compatible network (BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, Greenfield), for delegation to validators, for network governance and for fee discounts on Binance.
- « BNB is required to pay transaction fees when interacting with the network. » BNB Chain (2026-10-03)
- « BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is an EVM-compatible blockchain designed to bring programmability and interoperability to the BNB Chain ecosystem. » BNB Chain (livre blanc, GitHub) (2024-08-20)
- No riba : met. The network's documentation provides for no yield on simple holding: BNB has no inflation, and rewards, drawn from transaction fees, are paid only to validators and to holders who delegate their BNB to them.
- « There is no inflation of native token: BNB, the block reward is collected from transaction fees, and it will be paid in BNB. » BNB Chain (documentation) (2026-09-20)
- « This enables BNB holders to stake their tokens with specified validators to secure the network and earn staking rewards. » BNB Chain (documentation) (2026-09-20)
- No gambling : met. The spot purchase is of a token recorded on a public blockchain, transferable between addresses and usable to pay network fees; it is not a contract on a price difference.
- No excessive gharar : met. The supply, the absence of inflation and the two burn mechanisms (quarterly Auto-Burn based on the BNB price and the number of blocks, burning of a share of gas fees under BEP-95) are published, along with the amount of each burn; the value of the adjusted parameters of the formula is not given in the announcements read.
- « BNB adopts an Auto-Burn system to reduce its total supply to 100,000,000 BNB. » BNB Chain (2026-10-03)
- « The quarterly burn is replaced with BNB Auto-Burn based on the price of BNB, as well as the number of blocks produced during a quarter. » BNBBurn.info (NodeReal, linked from bnbchain.org) (2026-10-03)
- Real ownership : met. BNB is transferred from a platform to a personal wallet address; French Binance customers keep the ability to withdraw their crypto after services in France stopped on July 1, 2026.
- « You can purchase BNB on centralized exchanges using fiat currencies and transfer the token to your wallet address. » BNB Chain (2026-10-03)
- « crypto and euro withdrawals would remain possible » Journal du Coin (2026-09-30)
- No fraud or manipulation : to be verified or tolerated case. Binance, the issuer of BNB, and its founder pleaded guilty in the United States in November 2023 (failure to maintain an anti-money-laundering program, unlicensed money transmission, sanctions violations; more than $4.3 billion), regulators have published alerts targeting Binance, and holding of the token is concentrated; these decisions concern the operation of the platform, not fraud affecting the BNB token itself.
- « Binance Holdings Limited has pleaded guilty to criminal violations concerning unlicensed money transmitting businesses, the Bank Secrecy Act, and U.S. sanctions laws » CFTC (2023-11-21)
- « Zhao has pleaded guilty to intentionally causing Binance Holdings Limited to violate the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to implement an effective anti-money laundering program » CFTC (2023-11-21)
- Réseau ouvert et généraliste : met. un outil neutre
- « Any organization or individual can become part of the validator set by creating their validator on-chain and securing sufficient delegations. » BNB Chain (documentation) (2026-09-20)
- « The active validator set consists of 45 validators: 21 Cabinet and 24 Candidates. » BNB Chain (documentation) (2026-09-20)
Tolerance case
T1. BNB is the native currency of BNB Smart Chain, an EVM-compatible network whose documentation states that any organization or person can create a validator (45 active validators): T1 case. BNB is also the token of the Binance platform. The 2017 white paper provided for devoting 20% of Binance's profits to buying back and burning BNB; the mention of profits was removed in 2019 in favor of trading volume; since December 2021, the quarterly burn (Auto-Burn) follows a formula based on the BNB price and the number of blocks, which Binance and BNB Chain declare independent of the centralized platform. The remaining links to the platform are the fee discounts, access to its products and the share of the supply held by Binance and its founder. Binance does not publish the breakdown of its revenue: the share from derivatives, margin and lending is unknown and is not estimated here (T2 case cannot be quantified). In volumes only: CoinGlass reports for Binance, in the first quarter of 2026, about $4.9 trillion in derivatives versus $639.9 billion in spot; CoinMarketCap reports a derivatives-to-spot ratio of 5.40 for April 2026.
Opinions found during the research
- Sharlife (Malaysia) — Sharlife sharia committee, 2nd meeting of March 29, 2024 : Status shown for BNB: “Shariah-compliant” (Shariah: Passed). The committee concludes that exchange platform tokens are compliant in themselves and that the user must avoid non-compliant uses; on the same page, the platform's uses are rated: Trade “Grey”, Futures “Failed”, Earn “Grey”. Last screening shown: Q1 2025. (2024-03-29) source
- ShariaQuant (screening site; the page states that no scholar reviewed this verdict and that it is not a fatwa) : Status shown: “Halal” for spot holding, provided margin and leverage are avoided. (2026-09-20) source
- CryptoUmmah (screening site; page written by Thanvir, reviewed by Imam Omar Siddiqi) : Status shown: “Halal (Light Purification)”, compliance score 73.4/100. (2026-07-13) source

What could not be verified
- Share of Binance's revenue from derivatives, margin and lending: not published (unlisted company, no public financial statements read); only trading volumes are available. No percentage is therefore provided for the T2 case.
- Auto-Burn formula: it is displayed as an image on bnbburn.info and on Binance's blog; its exact expression could not be quoted word for word. The value of the “adjusted” parameters mentioned in the announcements of the 32nd to 36th burns was not found.
- binance.com (blog, Academy, fee schedule, announcements): HTTP 202 response with no content to curl (anti-robot protection, not bypassed). - sec.gov: curl refused (HTTP 403); the two SEC pages were read only with the WebFetch tool, quotations not cross-checked against the raw HTML.
- Binance's original white paper (2017): not read directly; its content is reported by Decrypt (2020), The Block (2019) and Forbes (2024).
- Concentration: no estimate more recent than Forbes's (June 2024, more than eighteen months old) of the share held by Binance and its founder; on BscScan, Binance's own share and that of its customers cannot be distinguished within the addresses labeled Binance, and the owner of the top address (22.45%) is not identified.
- Sources more than eighteen months old, used for historical facts: CFTC and Treasury (2023-11), SEC (2023-06), The Block (2019-04), Decrypt (2020-01), BNB Chain blog (2022-11), BEP-95 (2023-08), BNB Chain white paper (2024-08), Forbes (2024-06), Reuters (2025-01).

- I-SCAN: the detailed reason for each alert (“View More” pages, including that of the Monetary Authority of Singapore of March 30, 2026) was not opened.
- Religious opinions: the original document of the Shariyah Review Bureau (cited by HalalWallet) and the Amanie Advisors certificate for Sharia Earn were not read at their source; no opinion from a body (AAOIFI, fiqh academy, national council) specifically on BNB was found.
- CoinGlass report for the first quarter of 2026: publication day not shown (date used: 2026-04).
- Pages without their own date (bnbchain.org/en/what-is-bnb, bnbburn.info, BscScan, I-SCAN searches and AMF blacklist, CoinGecko API): the date indicated is that of consultation, October 3, 2026.
