Is GateToken (GT) halal?
No condition fails, but 1 point remains to be verified or falls under a tolerated case.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/07/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Native token of Gate Chain (EVM layer 1, proof of stake) and gas token of Gate Layer (OP Stack layer 2), token of the Gate exchange platform; historical ERC-20 version on Ethereum, scanned here Issuer: Gate (formerly Gate.io), a platform founded in 2013 by Lin Han; the entity Gate Technology Limited (Malta) is MiCA-licensed; Gate Chain is developed by Gate and its code is published.
GT pays transaction fees on Gate Chain and Gate Layer, is staked with Gate Chain validators (Gatemint consensus) and carries weight in governance voting; it also gives benefits on the platform (Launchpool, discounts). The initial supply of 300 million is reduced by burns: on July 6, 2026, Gate announced 189,947,219 GT burned since 2019 (63.32% of the initial supply), but consensus issuance adds to supply. CoinMarketCap as of October 7, 2026: circulating supply 104.67 million, total supply 138.07 million, rank 60. ERC-20 contract: 0xe66747a101bff2dba3697199dcce5b743b454759 (supply fixed at 300 million at creation, of which 191.9 million at the address that receives burned tokens). Solana contract: ABAq2R9gSpDDGguQxBk4u13s4ZYW6zbwKVBx15mCMG8 (not scanned).
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. GT has uses documented by the issuer: native token of Gate Chain, sole gas token of Gate Layer, validators' stake (required to produce blocks) and a voting right weighted by holdings. The token's purpose is neither gambling nor lending; Gate Layer does, however, host a perpetuals platform among other applications (see tolerance).

- « As the sole Gas token for the Gate Layer » Odaily (official announcement of the second quarter 2026 burn) (2026-07-06)
- No riba : met. Holding GT pays nothing in itself. Validation staking (a separate product, see autres_constats) is rewarded by the protocol; transaction fees are partly burned. The periodic GT buybacks are funded by profits of the Gate platform, which include spot, margin and futures trading: a funding link is noted, with no return paid to the holder (see tolerance).
- « GT token maintains deflation through transaction fee burning mechanism (partial fees from each transaction are destroyed) and periodic buyback-and-burn » Gate Chain (documentation, gouvernance) (2025-11-21)
- « profits from spot, margin, and futures trading are allocated to buy back and burn GT » Mobee (broker site, GT guide, undated page, read on October 7, 2026) (2026-10-07)
- No gambling : met. A spot purchase is of a transferable ERC-20 token, with a published supply verifiable on-chain; it is not a contract on a price difference. Gate's perpetuals are a separate product of the platform.
- « "total_supply":"300000000000000000000000000" » Blockscout (GT token on Ethereum) (2026-10-07)
- No excessive gharar : met. The issuer is identified: Gate, founded by Lin Han, whose Maltese entity is MiCA-licensed. The token's rules are documented (consensus token, burned fees, periodic buybacks); the verified ERC-20 code fixes supply at 300 million with no minting function, and its owner can suspend all transfers (issuer power, see the scan). Gate Chain governance requires multisignature wallets for critical operations; their signers were not read. No anonymous party was found.

- « Gate Technology Limited,984500D6A0F945BB5A15,MT,Gate » ESMA (registre MiCA, CASPS.csv) (2026-09-30)
- Real ownership : met. GT is withdrawn from the Gate platform to a personal wallet (Gate Layer); the ERC-20 token is held in any Ethereum wallet. The owner of the ERC-20 contract can suspend transfers (see the scan).

- No fraud or manipulation : to be verified or tolerated case. No deception toward GT buyers is established. However, Chile's financial markets commission (CMF) published an alert on May 6, 2026 naming Gate.io, Gate Global UAB, Gate Technology Ltd and ten other group entities as not registered or authorized in Chile; Wikipedia further reports that Gate did not comply with orders from a Chilean court (return of funds stolen in 2023) and that Apple removed the app in Chile. Older I-SCAN lines target Gate.io (CONSOB 2021, CNMV 2022). These grounds are unrelated to the sale of the token; the contract scan falls under the issuer powers read under A.8 (see autres_constats).

Contract security scan
GoPlus security scan of the GT contract on Ethereum: 4,155 holders; top ten wallets excluding exchanges and contracts 99.9%; code published. Signals found: minting right, hidden owner, transfer suspension, address freezing, concentration. Reading under A.8, identified and MiCA-licensed issuer: (1) the verified code (Blockscout) fixes supply at 300 million at construction and contains no minting function: the minting flag is not corroborated; (2) the contract owner, the creator's address, can suspend all transfers (functions activeMode and resetMode): issuer power; the code's freeze and unfreeze functions freeze only the caller's balance; (3) the top address (64% of ERC-20 supply) receives the burned tokens each quarter, which explains most of the 99.9%; the “hidden owner” is the contract creator, identified on the explorer. None of these points is read as a rug pull signal; the suspension power is left to Halal Bourse's judgment.
Opinions found during the research
- CryptoUmmah (site by Thanvir, former director at S&P Global Energy; review attributed to Imam Omar Siddiqi) : “Mashbooh · Doubtful · Risky” for Gate Token, score 66.9/100 (2026-07-13) source
- ShariaQuant (screening site; “AI-assisted” verdict, no scholar named) : Verdict “Haram”: the token has a permitted utility (gas, staking) but its buybacks are funded by Gate.io's profits, drawn notably from margin lending and leveraged derivatives (2026-07-15) source
- HalalScreener (screening application, not a scholar) : Status “Halal”, score 85/100, grade A, review of October 7, 2026 (qualitative filter on the token's use) (2026-10-07) source

What could not be verified
- Share of Gate's profits drawn from derivatives, margin and lending: not published. The buyback funding rule (15% of spot, margin and futures trading profits, 5% for the ecosystem) comes from an undated secondary source; no official Gate page could be read (gate.com blocks robots). T2 cannot be quantified.
- Current buyback and burn rule: Gate's official announcements page (gate.com/announcements/gt) was blocked; only Odaily's account of the second quarter 2026 burn was read. Gate Chain consensus issuance rule: not read; the gap between CoinMarketCap's total supply (138.07 million) and 300 million minus announced burns (110.05 million) is not explained.
- Identity of the owners of Gate Chain's multisignature wallets, of the ERC-20 contract owner (0x5a0c161cdd3d3e2a82f3ace2d38a4646c32f96dd, creator's address, attribution to Gate not read on the explorer) and of the address that receives burned tokens: not established; nothing proves that this address is inaccessible, unlike a dead address.
- GT's Solana contract, Gate Chain's native token and Gate Layer's token: not scanned; the GoPlus scan covers the Ethereum ERC-20 contract.
- Chilean court orders and Apple's removal of the app: reported by Wikipedia alone, with no ruling read; neither the CMF page nor a court decision mentions non-compliance.
- I-SCAN: the page does not give the reason for each line; the site's anti-robot protection occasionally blocked some searches, which were then rerun.
- Share of Gate's volumes drawn from derivatives: not found; only volume increases and a 2022 description were read.
- Gate's paid referral: not studied. Sharlife profile: paid, not read; Islamic Finance Guru does not list GT.
