Is Canton Coin (CC) halal?
The six conditions are met for a spot purchase.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/07/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Native currency of the Canton network (a permissioned public layer 1: the Global Synchronizer is run by invited super validators) Issuer: No issuer in the traditional sense: CC is minted by the protocol as a reward for activity. The Canton Foundation (a Delaware company with no shareholders, registered on June 24, 2024, executive director Melvis Langyintuo) is applying for admission to trading in the European Union and coordinates governance; Digital Asset Holdings, LLC (New York, founded in 2014) developed the protocol; Grayscale's prospectus also cites a Global Synchronizer Foundation “facilitated by the Linux Foundation”. The Canton Foundation website lists 65 super validator nodes..
CC pays for Global Synchronizer traffic (fees, denominated in dollars, are settled by burning CC) and is minted as a reward for super validators, validators and application providers. No presale or premine is disclosed; the supply has no fixed cap: a minting curve of about 100 billion CC over ten years, then about 2.5 billion per year, offset by the burning of fees. According to CoinMarketCap, 39.78 billion CC were in circulation on October 7, 2026 (rank 23); according to Grayscale's prospectus, 38.2 billion on March 31, 2026.
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. CC is used to pay for Global Synchronizer traffic (by being burned) and rewards the activity of operators and applications; this role is described by the official documentation, by the Canton Foundation's MiCA white paper and by the prospectus of a fund filed with the SEC.
- « Users spend CC (by burning it) to purchase synchronizer traffic » Canton Network (official documentation, Global Synchronizer tokenomics) (2026-10-07)
- « CC is used to pay network transaction fees, to reward validators and application providers » Grayscale Canton ETF (preliminary prospectus S-1, SEC) (2026-06-05)
- No riba : met. Holding CC pays no yield derived from a loan: new coins are minted for those who provide a service to the network (infrastructure, applications), not for holders; on the contrary, holding fees (per coin contract) exist. No loan is involved in the spot purchase.
- « Validators, Super Validators, and application providers earn CC by contributing infrastructure and activity to the network » Canton Network (official documentation, Global Synchronizer tokenomics) (2026-10-07)
- « Holding fees incentivize merging small coins to reduce on-ledger storage. » Canton Network (official documentation, Global Synchronizer tokenomics) (2026-10-07)
- No gambling : met. A spot purchase covers the native token of a network, used to pay fees and transferable between accounts; it is not a contract on a price difference.
- « CC is the native utility token of the Canton Network. » Grayscale Canton ETF (preliminary prospectus S-1, SEC) (2026-06-05)
- « you can now hold and transfer CC directly, with your private keys secured by your Ledger signer. » Ledger (blog) (2026-08-19)
- No excessive gharar : met. Issuance is documented (predefined minting curve, burning of fees, no presale or premine disclosed) and the parties who decide it are identified: the parameters (set of super validators, minting curve, fees) are subject to a vote by the super validators, institutions named on the Canton Foundation website, whose leader is named in the MiCA white paper. Issuance can therefore be changed by that vote; no anonymous party controlling issuance, treasury or keys was found. The supply has no fixed cap (see description).
- « There was no pre-mine, pre-sale, or similar distribution of CC. » Grayscale Canton ETF (preliminary prospectus S-1, SEC) (2026-06-05)
- « including the set of active Super Validators, the minting curve and rights split » Canton Foundation (MiCA white paper, filed with the Central Bank of Ireland) (2025-11-01)
- Real ownership : met. CC can be held outside the network operators: the official documentation provides for “external parties” who sign with their own keys and not through the validator, and since August 19, 2026 Ledger has offered individuals self-custody access, with private keys on the Ledger device. The network remains permissioned on the operator side (super validators are invited); an individual's account is hosted by a validator whose identity is not specified (see gaps).
- « parties that sign with their own keys rather than through the validator » Canton Network (official documentation, Global Synchronizer tokenomics) (2026-10-07)
- « you can now hold and transfer CC directly, with your private keys secured by your Ledger signer. » Ledger (blog) (2026-08-19)
- No fraud or manipulation : met. No sanction, court decision or deception of CC buyers was found; the AMF blacklist and the IOSCO I-SCAN return nothing for “canton coin” and “canton network”. The team is identified. Grayscale's prospectus reports heavy concentration (the 100 largest wallets hold about 89% of circulating CC) and an accumulation of CC by early participants (super validators, applications): under the Halal Bourse rule, concentration alone is information, not a defect. The GoPlus scan does not apply to a native currency.
- « the largest 100 CC wallets held approximately 89% of the CC in circulation » Grayscale Canton ETF (preliminary prospectus S-1, SEC) (2026-06-05)
- « No result » AMF (liste noire, recherche « canton coin ») (2026-10-07)
Contract security scan
Not applicable: CC is a native currency; the starting file lists no contract on another chain. No GoPlus scan was therefore run (rule A.8: the scan does not apply to native currencies).
Opinions found during the research
- Halal Screener (automated screening site, not a scholar) : “Halal”, score 85/100 (grade A): the token passes the qualitative screen based on its use and the protocol mechanics; the page states a review on October 7, 2026 and no AAOIFI standard for crypto (2026-10-07) source
Opinions reported as read, named for what they are; they do not enter into the calculation of the verdict.
What could not be verified
- Full list of super validators, weighting of their minting rights, actual voting results and the share of CC held by each: not read (member names seen on the Canton Foundation website only); the allocation of the first issuances (80% to super validators according to a third-party site) was not verified.
- Concentration: share of the top ten wallets excluding exchanges and identity of large holders not found; only the 89% figure for the top 100 (Grayscale prospectus) was read.
- Self-custody: the validator that hosts an individual's account in Ledger Wallet, its terms, and what happens if it stops operating are not documented in the pages read; individual access dates from 7 weeks ago (August 19, 2026).
- Code: the prospectus states that some components of the protocol are open and others proprietary; the unpublished part was not examined.
- Sanctions and disputes: web search with no result, no direct consultation of the enforcement databases of the SEC, the CFTC or OFAC.
- Religious opinions: only Halal Screener (automated) covers CC; no CryptoUmmah page, no Sharlife page and no Islamic Finance Guru entry for this asset.
- Canton Foundation MiCA white paper: read in part (parts A, D, G, H); the risk section was not used. Canton documentation pages are undated (reading date indicated).
- Wrapped version of CC on other chains (mentioned by third-party sites): not examined, no contract in the starting file.
