Is Cronos (CRO) halal?
No condition fails, but 3 points remain to be verified or fall under a tolerated case.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/07/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
ERC-20 token on Ethereum (0xA0b73E1Ff0B80914AB6fe0444E65848C4C34450b), the legacy version of CRO; according to Crypto.com, the native CRO of Cronos POS is a distinct asset Issuer: Token launched in 2018 in the Crypto.com ecosystem (Foris DAX), then named Crypto.org Coin, then Cronos; the network is developed by Cronos Labs Inc., which describes itself as an entity separate from Crypto.com.
CRO is used for Cronos EVM fees, for staking and voting on Cronos POS, and for Crypto.com card rewards. The ERC-20 converts to native CRO through a one-way migration. Maximum supply: 100 billion; total supply 98.97 billion on October 6, 2026 (CoinGecko), including 70 billion re-created in March 2025 in a strategic reserve.
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. CRO pays Cronos EVM fees, is used for staking and voting on Cronos POS and for Crypto.com card rewards; the ERC-20 is a distinct asset, convertible to native CRO.
- « Transaction fees are paid in Cronos ($CRO), a blue chip cryptocurrency. » Cronos (doc. EVM) (2026-10-07)
- « Spending rewards are paid in CRO and deposited into your Crypto Wallet in the Crypto.com App after every eligible transaction. » Crypto.com (cartes) (2026-10-07)
- No riba : met. Holding the CRO ERC-20 pays nothing; staking requires migrating to native CRO and then delegating it, and its rewards come from protocol issuance and the strategic reserve, not from a loan (product covered in autres_constats).
- « you must first migrate your ERC20 CRO to native CRO on Mainnet before performing the staking operations. » Crypto.com (aide) (2025-01-10)
- « providing a deterministic path from 1% inflation toward zero » Cronos POS (proposition 33) (2026-05-19)
- No gambling : met. A spot purchase covers an ERC-20 token transferable between addresses (about 346,000 holders); it is not a contract on a price difference.
- « Max Total Supply 100,000,000,000 CRO Holders 345,979 » Etherscan (2026-10-07)
- No excessive gharar : to be verified or tolerated case. The ERC-20 contract is verified, its minting is closed and the maximum supply of 100 billion is documented; but 70 billion re-created in March 2025 sit in a strategic reserve whose address and holder do not appear in the sources read, and their lock-up could not be verified.
- « 70 Billion of $CRO to be allocated to the Cronos Strategic Reserve escrow wallet address » Cronos (GitHub) (2025-03-03)
- « The supply of the crypto-asset is limited to 100,000,000,000 units. » CRO MiCA white paper (2026-09-01)
- Real ownership : met. CRO can be withdrawn to a personal wallet: the [ERC20] option when withdrawing from Crypto.com and adding it to MetaMask for the Ethereum token, external withdrawal for native CRO.
- « Choose to withdraw CRO as native CRO on Cronos POS Chain by selecting the default [CRO] option instead of [ERC20] to other external wallets » Crypto.com (aide) (2025-01-10)
- « Add Token to MetaMask (Web3) » Etherscan (2026-10-07)
- No fraud or manipulation : to be verified or tolerated case. In 2023 the Dutch DNB fined Foris DAX MT (Crypto.com) €2.85 million for providing services without registration, reduced to €2.2775 million by the Rotterdam court (December 19, 2025, appeal pending): a ground unrelated to the sale of the token. No deception of buyers is established; the SEC investigation was closed without action.
- « Crypto exchange Crypto.com was hit with a fine of 2.85 million euros ($3.12 million) last October by the Dutch central bank » CoinDesk (2024-03-14)
- « The Court of Rotterdam subsequently reduced the fine to €2,277,500. » DNB (Wayback, company not named) (2026-03-10)
- Revenus illicites de l'émetteur : to be verified or tolerated case. share not published
- « Perpetual Contract trading allows eligible users to use leverage to open a position larger than the balance of the Account. » Crypto.com (aide) (2026-10-07)
- « Leveraged perpetuals on crypto majors, US stocks and commodities such as gold. » Cronos Labs (strategy) (2026-10-07)
Tolerance case
T2. Crypto.com offers leveraged perpetual contracts; Cronos Labs offers them in Ult; proposal 37 (adopted on October 3, 2026) directs all revenue from Ult and Cronos Launch to buying back and burning CRO. No share of revenue from leverage or derivatives is published: percentage unknown, not estimated. T1 not retained: the scanned token is the ERC-20, a distinct asset from native CRO, and Cronos EVM has a permissioned consensus (PoA); T1 would remain to be examined for the native CRO of Cronos POS, which Crypto.com says is permissionless.
Contract security scan
GoPlus security scan of the CRO contract on Ethereum: 346,324 holders; top ten wallets excluding exchanges and contracts 94.8%; code published. Signals found: Minting right: the supply can be increased by the contract owner (is_mintable). Top ten wallets excluding exchanges and contracts: 94.8% of the supply. Reading: address confirmed by Etherscan and CoinGecko. No signal remains: minting is closed (mintingFinished and released true, RPC read at block 26136691, not citable on the page) and the address 0x…dEaD, labeled “Burn”, holds 86.85% of the supply, which accounts for the 94.8%. No actual rug pull signal under A.8; audit not sought.
