Is UNUS SED LEO (Bitfinex LEO Token) (LEO) halal?
No condition fails, but 4 points remain to be verified or fall under a tolerated case.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/07/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Token of the Bitfinex exchange platform, issued in May 2019 on Ethereum (ERC-20) and on EOS (now Vaulta) Issuer: Unus Sed Leo Limited (issuer named in the white paper); iFinex Inc., operator of Bitfinex, makes the buyback commitment.
Fee discounts on Bitfinex; iFinex has promised to buy back LEO every month for at least 27% of its consolidated gross revenue. Ethereum contract confirmed by Etherscan and Blockscout: 0x2AF5D2aD76741191D15Dfe7bF6aC92d4Bd912Ca3 (ERC-20 supply: 660,000,000).
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : to be verified or tolerated case. LEO gives fee discounts and an affiliate multiplier on Bitfinex, without serving as a network fee or for governance; the platform offers interest-bearing peer-to-peer lending, margin and derivatives, and its schedule shows zero trading fees (the remaining LEO discounts apply to funding fees).
- « This whitepaper introduces the initial offering of a new utility token, LEO, for use on Bitfinex and other iFinex trading platforms. » Bitfinex (livre blanc LEO, PDF) (2019-05)
- « level 1 users obtain taker fee discounts of 15%. » Bitfinex (centre d'aide, copie Wayback) (2025-06-17)
- No riba : met. Holding LEO pays no yield in the pages read (fee discounts only); the buyback of 27% of revenue is a commitment by the issuer to the market, funded by revenue that includes margin interest (treated under T2).
- « Token holders will experience benefits across the entire portfolio and are expected to obtain benefits from future projects, products, and services » Bitfinex (livre blanc LEO, PDF) (2019-05)
- « buy back an amount of LEO from the market equal to a minimum of 27% of the consolidated gross revenues of iFinex » Bitfinex (livre blanc LEO, PDF) (2019-05)
- No gambling : met. A spot purchase covers an ERC-20 token transferable between addresses (3,635 holders on October 7, 2026); it is not a contract on a price difference.
- « Max Total Supply 660,000,000 LEO Holders 3,635 » Etherscan (jeton LEO) (2026-10-07)
- No excessive gharar : to be verified or tolerated case. A controller can create LEO and cut off transfers; it is held by a 3-of-6 multisig whose signers are not identified in the pages read; the 2019 white paper says that its information has changed and that its financial data is unaudited.
- « function issueTokens(uint _amount) public onlyOwner returns (bool) { » Blockscout (verified code of the LEO controller) (2026-10-07)
- « function enableTransfers(bool _transfersEnabled) public onlyController { » Blockscout (verified code of the LEO token) (2026-10-07)
- Real ownership : met. LEO exists as ERC-20, transferable to a personal wallet; the fee discounts require converting it back on Bitfinex (unavailable in some jurisdictions, list not read).
- « Unus Sed LEO is issued on Vaulta and ERC20 blockchains, with both versions easily converted on Bitfinex. » Bitfinex (centre d'aide, copie Wayback) (2025-06-19)
- « LEO-Vaulta and LEO-ERC20 tokens need to be converted to UNUS SED LEO in order to contribute to LEO discounts. » Bitfinex (centre d'aide, copie Wayback) (2025-06-17)
- No fraud or manipulation : to be verified or tolerated case. iFinex was sanctioned by the CFTC (2016 and 2021) and, together with Tether, by the New York Attorney General ($18.5M in 2021, false statements about Tether, $850M of concealed losses): grounds unrelated to the sale of LEO; a class action has been certified since March 2026; the GoPlus scan flags an uncorroborated honeypot (autres_constats).
- « The order finds Bitfinex engaged in illegal, off-exchange retail commodity transactions in digital assets with U.S persons on the Bitfinex trading platform » CFTC (release 8450-21) (2021-10-15)
- « The order requires Bitfinex to pay a $1.5 million civil monetary penalty. » CFTC (release 8450-21) (2021-10-15)
- Revenus illicites de l'émetteur : to be verified or tolerated case. share not published
- « A standard fee of 15% applies to margin lending earnings. » Bitfinex (page Margin Lending) (2026-10-07)
- « Access up to 10x leverage through one of the crypto industry's most established peer-to-peer funding markets. » Bitfinex (page Margin Trading) (2026-10-07)
Tolerance case
T2. LEO is not the native currency of a network (T1 not accepted). The buyback is based on iFinex's consolidated gross revenue, which includes 15% of the interest received by lenders, leveraged margin (up to 10 times) and derivatives (up to 100 times); trading fees are zero in the current schedule. iFinex does not publish the breakdown of its revenue: the share of these activities is unknown and is not estimated.
Contract security scan
GoPlus security scan of the LEO contract on Ethereum: 3,567 holders; top ten wallets excluding platforms and contracts 1.7%; published code. Signals found: Honeypot: the contract prevents resale (GoPlus: is_honeypot). The contract owner can modify holders' balances (owner_change_balance). Transfers can be suspended by the contract (transfer_pausable). Reading: the honeypot flag is corroborated neither by a sell tax (empty field) nor by cannot_sell_all, and the code read blocks no sale by address (cause not established). The code lets the controller issue LEO and cut off transfers (GoPlus indicates is_mintable 0). Issuer identified (iFinex), sanctioned on other grounds: modifiable supply and suspension make two signals on paper, but A.8 rules out a rug pull for an identified issuer exercising issuer powers (USDT, POL precedents): to be decided by Halal Bourse.
