Is Stellar (XLM) halal?
The six conditions are met for a spot purchase.
Verdict calculated by Halal Bourse's published rules from an investigation of primary sources (project documentation, registers, decisions), conducted on 10/05/2026 and not reviewed by a human.
The asset
Native currency (“lumen”) of the Stellar network, a public blockchain with federated consensus and a smart contract platform Issuer: No issuer: the 100 billion lumens were created when the network launched; the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), a non-profit organization with no shareholders, holds a reserve called the “SDF mandate”.
The lumen pays transaction fees, contract storage “rent” and the minimum balance required of each account. The 1% annual inflation ended on October 28, 2019, and 55.44 billion lumens were burned on November 4, 2019. As of October 5, 2026, total supply is 50.00 billion XLM, of which about 14.67 billion sit in the SDF mandate. CoinGecko (14:51 UTC) shows a price of €0.192433 and a market capitalization of €6.75 billion (rank 20).
Why this verdict
- Permissible purpose : met. XLM is the native currency of a public payments and contracts blockchain; it is used for transaction fees and the minimum account balance. No gambling, interest-bearing lending or impermissible content is found for the token.
- « Lumens (XLM) are the native currency of the Stellar network. » Stellar Docs (Lumens) (2026-10-05)
- « So, we gave the network its own currency, intended solely for denominating network requirements. » Stellar.org (Learn) (2026-10-05)
- No riba : met. No yield is paid for holding it: the 1% annual inflation, in force during the first years, was removed by a validator vote on October 28, 2019. Lending or yield products built on the network fall under other findings.
- « For the first five or so years of Stellar's existence, the supply of lumens increased by 1% annually. » Stellar Docs (Lumens) (2026-10-05)
- « ended by validator vote on October 28, 2019 » Stellar Docs (Lumens) (2026-10-05)
- No gambling : met. A spot purchase is of a token recorded on a public blockchain, transferable between addresses and used for payments; it is not a contract on a price difference.
- « For storing lumens and for easy access to network features like payments and peer-to-peer sends » Stellar.org (Learn) (2026-10-05)
- No excessive gharar : met. The supply and its rules are published: 100 billion created at launch, 5.44 billion from inflation, 55.44 billion burned in 2019, no new issuance. The breakdown of supply (including the SDF mandate) is published continuously by the foundation.
- « all XLM that has ever existed and will ever exist was created when the Stellar network went live » Stellar Docs (Lumens) (2026-10-05)
- « The Total Supply is the number of lumens now in existence: 50,001,786,839.9124767. » Stellar Docs (Lumens) (2026-07-21)
- Real ownership : met. XLM can be held in a personal wallet; the official documentation points to hardware and software wallets.
- « For storing lumens and for easy access to network features like payments and peer-to-peer sends » Stellar.org (Learn) (2026-10-05)
- « Freighter is a browser extension wallet provided by the Stellar Development Foundation. » Stellar Docs (Freighter) (2026-10-05)
- No fraud or manipulation : met. No sanction, regulator warning or manipulation targeting XLM was found; the foundation is identified and has no shareholders. The SDF holds about 29% of total supply, which is published, and it sells part of it on platforms to fund its activities.
- « SDF is not a charity. It is self-funded, pays taxes, and has no shareholders. » Stellar Development Foundation (mandat) (2026-10-05)
- « The SDF sells XLM from this account on public exchanges like Kraken, Coinbase, and Bitstamp and through direct sales » Stellar Development Foundation (mandat) (2026-10-05)
- Réseau ouvert et généraliste : met. un outil neutre
- « Soroban settings are network-wide, configurable, and changes can be proposed by anyone. » Stellar Docs (Validators) (2026-10-05)
- « The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) is a non-profit organization with a mission » Stellar Development Foundation (mandat) (2026-10-05)
Tolerance case
T1. XLM is the native currency of a public, open blockchain (contract parameters can be proposed by anyone and are voted on by validators). It has no issuer that earns revenue from it: the SDF is a non-profit organization with no shareholders (case T2 not applicable).
